Looking for a way to get your kids away from the TV and their laptops, but also keep them learning? Warwickshire is home to an abundance of beautiful parks and nature reserves, which not only act as the perfect retreat from computer screens but also enable a new kind of learning.

To get you inspired for the autumnal weekends ahead, we’ve put together a list of the very best Warwickshire wildlife spots. Now all that’s left to do is to decide on which one you’ll visit first!

Coombe Abbey Country Park

We’re extremely lucky to have the beautiful Coombe Abbey Country Park right on our doorstep, meaning if you stay with us you’ll only have a short walk until you’re in the midst of this forested area. Within the park, you and your children will be able to explore the conservation area, spot birds in the bird hide, and even go fishing in the Coombe Pool Fishery. For smaller children, there’s also a park complete with slides and swings, as well as Coombe’s ponds, where ducks, geese and swans flock looking for tasty treats.

Draycote Water

Located in Kites Hardwick, just outside of the town of Rugby, Draycote Water Nature Reserve offers not only a 5-mile walk around the picturesque reservoir, but also 21 acres of parkland to explore. If you decide to wander around the lake, you’re likely to spot many of the local wildlife, including birds such as smews and little egrets, and even the odd neighbouring alpaca. Alternatively, you can also walk across the 21 acres of parkland, where sheep, cows, rabbits and mice are just a handful of the many animals you’ll spot during your trek. Once you’ve explored the entirety of Draycote Water, be sure to take part in the onsite watersports. From windsurfing to kayaking, you and your kids will have a blast on the water.

Brandon Marsh Nature Centre

The headquarters of the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, the Brandon Marsh reserve spans 220 acres and is dotted with a number of pools. In terms of wildlife watching, the reserve is home to 8 hides that are perfect for bird watching and trying your hand at naming the various species. On top of spotting wildlife, children can take part in a number of fun activities, including den building and acting as a funghi detective in the search for unusual mushrooms! Not only that, but the reserve hosts a range of events, from pond dipping for children to art exhibitions, guided walks, wildlife courses and Christmas crafts – so make sure you check out their calendar!

Hartshill Hayes Country Park

Just outside of Nuneaton is Hartshill Hayes Country Park, a beautiful destination for those looking for an escape, or for a chance to see wildlife at its best. From the springtime bluebell forest to the trickling streams, this is a beautiful place to bring your children on a weekend. You and your family can choose from a number of activities, including playing in the kid’s park, taking part in woodland walks and even environmental education, where they’ll learn all about habitats and the animals that live in them.

After you’ve explored every corner of these wonderful parks, you’re likely to have worked up an appetite. To keep you and your little ones happy, be sure to stop by our Garden Room Restaurant for a delicious meal or pre-book for an afternoon tea treat.
