Sir Earnest de Clapper has called together his family and household on Christmas Eve 1885 to present them with their Christmas presents. He is furious to discover that his wife,The lady Edith, has invited the inmates of the local workhouse to share a Christmas meal. He is even more furious when members of the local gentry arrive - having been invited by his
brother, Lord Edwin. However, he continues in front of them and they witness the fact that each gift gives very unwelcome news to those who receive them.
