Coventry Cathedral
No visit to Coventry is complete without a visit to Coventry Cathedral and the old Cathedral ruins, made famous after the Blitz in WW2. There’s also the linked modern Cathedral that was built as a beacon of peace and reconciliation following the war. It’s a great day experience for kids who love history and will be fascinated by the stories of old Coventry.
Coventry Transport Museum
Adults and children alike will love a tour of Coventry Transport Museum that celebrates the history of car and bicycle manufacture in Coventry and beyond. Explore the large collection of cars and bicycles on show, including a DeLorean car that is just like the one in the 80s film Back to the Future, as well as some of the world’s earliest bicycles. There’s plenty to keep little ones entertained as you work your way around the museum with interactive exhibitions and games.
Herbert Art Gallery and Museum
Coventry’s signature art gallery hosts a variety of both permanent and temporary exhibitions as well as fun workshops for children. Entry to the museum is free, but please be aware that some exhibitions may have a charge. The museum is open daily. Fargo Village
Fargo Village in Coventry’s self-styled creative quarter on Far Gosford Street is a great place to while away a day if you fancy a good browse as it has a huge range of unique stalls selling everything from vintage clothing and vinyls, to handmade candles and soaps. There’s also a variety of independent cafes, including a vegan cafe, and a pub for a break from all that browsing!
St John’s House Museum, Warwick
For a historical day out, head to St John’s House Museum in Warwick where you’ll find lots of great galleries to explore, including an old school room, a Victorian kitchen, childhood displays that include toys and games through history and an under-fives discovery room. The formal gardens are also great for a leisurely stroll and a picnic.
Ryton Pools
Escape to the country at Ryton Pools, just 20 minutes from the city centre, you’ll be amazed at the wondrous sense of calm and tranquillity in this oasis of beautiful countryside and, you can bring your bike or rent one onsite and make the most of warm summer days.
St Nicholas Park
With kids’ play areas, boat rides, adventure mini-golf, swimming at the outdoor pool (please note, children must be supervised at all times in the pool area) and sports activities, St Nicholas Park in Warwick offers a great day out for children over the summer (and beyond!). There’s also a fantastic fun park with rides suitable for children up to 12 years old if you fancy splashing out on a few rides.
St Mary’s Guildhall
For more history in Coventry, visit St Mary’s Guildhall. This imposing mediaeval building located on Bayley Lane in Coventry’s city centre is one of the finest surviving mediaeval guildhalls in England and has a magnificent history, including being the place where Mary Queen of Scots was once imprisoned and where Shakespeare once performed. The Coventry Watch Museum
Did you know that Coventry has a charming watch museum where you can discover more about the city’s watch making industry? Located in historic Spon Street, it’s a great place to visit and it is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 11am to 3pm.
Coombe Abbey Country Park
Our list of day experiences wouldn’t be complete without a mention of all the fun and free activities you can enjoy right here at Coombe Abbey Park. Hop on the bus or take a ride in your car to Coombe and discover our glorious grounds. Coombe Abbey is set in 500 acres of English parkland so take a stroll and take delight in tranquil lakeside views, our beautifully tended gardens with an array of flowers, woodland trails and the chance to do a spot of birdwatching. Bring a picnic and take a break on the grass or why not treat yourself to Afternoon Tea in our Garden Room Restaurant or tasty meals and coffee in our Cafe in the Park, located near the visitor centre where you’ll also find our gift shop.
