With beautiful parks to explore, fascinating heritage to discover and plenty of fun activities to enjoy, a trip to Warwickshire promises to be the highlight of your summer. To help you make the most of your trip to this picturesque part of central England, we’ve put together a list of summer holiday ideas to get you inspired. From theatre trips to Stratford, to long walks through the breathtaking countryside; this summer will be one of your best.
Watch a play
When visiting the home county of Shakespeare, it makes sense to journey over to Stratford-upon-Avon where you can watch a play in the collection of theatres: the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Swan Theatre and The Other Place. Enjoy watching the jealous rages performed through Othello, laughing at the hilarious The Taming of the Shrew and sobbing at the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet – there’s just so much to experience! Plus, after the play finishes you can return to Coombe Abbey Hotel and relax in a mediaeval-themed room that wouldn’t look out of place in a Shakespeare play.
Twycross Zoo
Let’s face it, everyone loves a trip to the zoo, regardless of age! And with Twycross Zoo being just a 45-minute drive from Coombe Abbey Hotel, it makes for a perfect day-trip destination. During your day out, you can make friends with the cheeky monkeys and apes, and even witness the fierce nature of the zoo’s amur leopards as they prowl through their enclosures. If you’re visiting with kids, be sure to stop by the Pets section, where they can handle the smaller animals, such as guinea pigs, rabbits and baby corn snakes (if they’re brave enough!).
Go for a summer walk
Luckily for us at Coombe Abbey, we’re surrounded by plenty of natural beauty and wondrous countryside, making it ideal for summertime hikes. For those of you fit enough, there is an 11-mile walk that starts from Coombe Abbey and ends up in the quaint village of Stoneleigh. Throughout your stroll you’ll be able to enjoy the local farmland, charming villages and the trickling rivers of the Avon and Sowe. You’ll also encounter plenty of village pubs along the way – perfect for when you’re in need of a pitstop. However, if you’re not quite up for the 11-mile walk, you can always explore Coombe Abbey’s grounds and the neighbouring park.
Sail past Warwick Castle
A true mediaeval marvel, Warwick Castle is a real treat for the eyes, and one of the best ways to enjoy it is via pedal boat or canoe. As you sail down the River Avon, past the looming watch towers and stunning castle ruins, you’ll get to explore the true beauty of Warwick, and its captivating countryside. And if you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie, kayak’s are also available for those who don’t mind getting wet!
