The top 5 attractions nearby
There’s plenty to do at The Avenue at Coombe and Coombe Abbey Park, whether your idea of a perfect holiday involves axe-throwing, punting, fine dining, or a peaceful walk around our lake. We’ve also got Coventry, Royal Leamington Spa, Warwick, and more on our doorstep, with plenty of free activities so you always get the most out of budget holiday staycations with us. Coventry is also only 20 mins to Birmingham and 1 hour to London by train.
1. Stratford-upon-Avon Canal
This historic town has beautiful open greenery, winding streets to lose yourself in, and a scenic canal running right through – walk the dog, enjoy a kick-around, or sip a few drinks in the sun… it’s easy to while away a few hours beside the water for free. This is a little further out, at just under 40 minutes’ drive from Coombe Abbey – but, Shakespeare fan or not, you can easily spend a day exploring the town.
2. Coventry Blitz Museum
If Coventry’s on your itinerary, take an hour or so to visit the Blitz Museum. You’ll experience life as it was in the 1940s, from the period school room to a wartime house full of artefacts. This thought-provoking spot is tucked away in the Coventry Cathedral Ruins, less than 20 minutes’ drive from Coombe Abbey.
Note that the Blitz Museum is run by volunteers and opening times can vary, so it’s worth checking before you go.
3. St Mary’s Guildhall
Step further into the past with Coventry’s historic Cathedral Quarter, which astoundingly survived the Blitz during the Second World War – this medieval guildhall is of great significance in the city since it was first built in the 1340s, and brings history to life with its expressive stained glass windows and art sculptures. Home to the extraordinary Coventry tapestry, and with over 700 years of history, St Mary’s Guildhall boasted visits from Shakespeare and a wealth of royal visitors, a testament to the city’s status of wealth and power throughout time.
4. Jephson Gardens
Venture into Leamington Spa and you’ll find Jephson Gardens in the middle. This regal Victorian park has something beautiful everywhere you look, whether it’s the tropical Glasshouse, the captivating Sensory Garden, or the Mill Gardens play area. It’s won multiple awards for its innovative and eco-friendly approach. Plus, it’s free to visit, so set your expectations high and your budget low.
5. Herbert Art Gallery & Museum
There’s something for all the family at the Herbert! Even better, it’s less than 20 minutes’ drive from Coombe Abbey. 16th-century paintings, interactive displays, and family-friendly art talks combine to make a captivating afternoon out. Take younger visitors for a Sensory Play Day, or let them get up close and personal to Dippy, the nation’s favourite dinosaur on loan from the Natural History Museum.
