4 Ways You Can Celebrate Shakespeare’s 400th Anniversary

Go back to all news

On April 23rd 2016, literature and theatre fans from around the world will come together to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Warwickshire playwright, William Shakespeare. If you’re travelling down to Shakespeare’s home county for a fun-filled, celebratory trip, we’ve got the perfect guide for you. With four inspiring ways to toast his 400th anniversary, you’re bound to have plenty of fun this spring.

1. Watch a play

The work of Shakespeare is infamous, and has heavily influenced modern literature and theatre. To experience Shakespeare in all its glory, we recommend going to Stratford-upon-Avon’s Royal Shakespeare Theatre to watch one of the many brilliant performances they showcase throughout the year. Currently, there are plenty of well-known plays to be watched, including one of Shakespeare’s most renowned tragedies, Hamlet, which is directed by Simon Goodwin and stars Paapa Essiedu.

2. Sleep like a Shakespearean character

Ever wondered what it would feel like to sleep as one of Shakespeare’s wondrous characters? Well, here at Coombe Abbey you can do just that. Nestled within the historic and beautiful Warwickshire countryside, our mediaeval hotel is perfect for fans of Shakespeare. All of our rooms are adorned in rich, royal colours, featuring four-poster beds and claw foot baths. And if that wasn’t enough, you can even take part in our mediaeval-themed banquets, where knights and goblets of mead are in abundance.

3. Visit Shakespeare’s birthplace

If you’re more interested in exploring Shakespeare’s past, a great place to start is Shakespeare’s birthplace, a beautiful cottage located on Stratford’s Henley Street. Offering a rare glimpse into Shakespeare’s life and family, the building has been well looked after and restored to give the look and feel of life during the 16th century. On top of his birthplace, you can also explore Anne Hathaway’s cottage (his wife), Mary Arden’s farm (his mother), and Hall’s Croft, the home of Shakespeare’s daughter, Susanna.

4. Attend Shakespeare’s Birthday Celebration Parade

If you want to go all out and celebrate Shakespeare’s anniversary with a bang, be sure to join the residents of Stratford-upon-Avon for the 2016 Shakespeare’s 400th Birthday Celebration Parade. From 10:30am on April 23rd, students, characters in period dress and theatre fans from around the world will come together to walk through the streets of Stratford to the beat of a marching band. The grand celebration will be full of joyous singing and laughter, and will end at Holy Trinity Church, the final resting place of William Shakespeare.
